Management of Gib Hill

Gib Hill is now cared for by the Gib Hill Guardians. (Registered Charity No. 1194129) For many years, the management of Gib Hill was neglected.  Initially, it was bought by Lancashire County Council as potential playing fields for the schools which back onto it.  However, the topography did not lend itself to sports, other than cross country!

Pendle Council was, for years expecting to develop a portion for housing, but, work by councillors keen to preserve this unspoilt grassland, saw it being registered as a Local Nature Reserve instead.  It was realised, following input from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, that optimal management would include mowing to encourage species diversity.  This was done where possible in 2022.  However, large portions of the Reserve are currently inaccessible to agricultural machinery, owing to ditches, so the Gib Hill Guardians are working to address this as a key priority.

The nature reserve relies on volunteer support. If you would like to be kept informed of any volunteering events, please fill in our volunteering events form. There are several other ways you can support the Gib Hill Guardians and the nature reserve. Please see our support us page.
